How To Help End Human Trafficking of Children

Did you know that an estimated 5.5 million children are victims of human trafficking, an illegal enterprise that generates an estimated $32 billion in yearly profits? I didn't until I learned all about about human trafficking through my membership in The Global Team of 200.

These children are bought and sold, forced into prostitution, or made to work at grueling jobs with little or no pay. And believe or not, thousands of the abducted children are from the USA.

While it is extremely difficult to even contemplate a world where this is happening and would prefer to wipe it out of my mind, that won't help anyone but me. Unicef has created an End Trafficking campaign. Watch this short PSA video by Angie Harmon, Ambassador to Unicef's campaign:




Here are suggestions of things that you can do to help the End Trafficking campaign and protect children worldwide:

• Join the Unicef Action Center to End Trafficking and donate to the cause
• Go to slaveryfootprint.org to find out which products you buy that are being made by people forced into slavery
• Learn more about Human Trafficking on the Not My Life website featuring a DVD and video about Human Trafficking.
• Go to the Get Trafficking Toolkit which will further inform you and also give you concrete action items that you can do to help.
• The National Human Trafficking Hotline number is 1-888-373-7888 which can be used to report potential cases, get help or request information or training.
• If you are a teacher or educator, Teachunicef has lesson plans on human trafficking for middle and high school grades.

How does Unicef help protect against human trafficking of children? Very importantly it works to help reduce factors that put children at risk. It also supports the training of social workers and health workers to spot signs of trafficking and works with communities to change societal practices that might make children more vulnerable to trafficking.

Please help Unicef help children from being abducted. Human Trafficking of children is one of the most abhorrent activities that I can possibly imagine.
