Gravity, or the lack of gravity, has been used in
movie special effects for decades. Over the last eleven years epic, gravity
defying fight scenes have permeated the movie goer psyche. Becoming almost
common place in movies, defying gravity is one way for writers, actors, and
directors to push the limits of film making. Here are great scenes from five
different movies that defy gravity in their own special way.
5. The Matrix: Neo vs. Agent Smith
When The
Matrix came out in 1999 it redefined the movie fight scene forever. This
gravity defying fight scene was one of the best ever produced. It was well
done, so well done in fact that movie makers tried to milk this scene for years
to come, much to the dismay of moviegoers everywhere.
4. The Phantom Menace: Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon
Jinn vs. Darth Maul
Although the die-hard fans, critical of the Star
Wars franchise, complained incessantly about The Phantom Menance, it’s fair to say that the inclusion of a
gravity defying scene like the one above isn’t out of the realm of
possibilities for a Jedi.
3. Hero: Nameless vs. Sky
This scene from Hero
is by far one of my favorite in the gravity defying category. Any scene with
Jet Li is awe inspiring, and this scene is no exception. Focusing mainly on
metal to metal contact this scene is a lot more fight, and not so much special
effects fluff that a lot of movies (I won’t name any names) suffer from.
2. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Jen Yu vs. Li Mu
Bai
After The
Matrix, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
is probably the movie that comes to mind for most people when they think
gravity defying fight scene. Certainly one of the best in its genre, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
introduced, and made common, a style of gravity free fighting all its own.
1. Inception: Arthur vs. the Projections
Inception
was one of those movies that takes an over played concept, like low gravity
fight scenes, and does something entirely new with it. Unlike most movies that
use wires or CGI for their special effects, the team behind Inception created an entire rotating set.
Capable of horizontal and vertical rotations this portion of the movie was the
most difficult scene to film. Not only was the set a first for movie makers, it
also required everyone, and everything, to be perfectly timed. I give my kudos
to Christopher Nolan for pulling this one off.

ReplyDeleteLoved Matrix and Hero, thanks for sharing..
ReplyDeleteGravity. Never thought of it this way!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I have to say, this is the first post I've ever read about gravity :) Very unique and interesting. I loved the Matrix!
ReplyDeleteThat scene in The Matrix has to be my favorite ever! I just bought Inception, I think I'll be watching that tonight :)
ReplyDeleteGreat list. I love that fight scene in the Matrix
ReplyDeleteCrouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was the first time I saw this type of fighting. Then came The Matrix and it was pretty amazing. But I think I like Inception best because I haven't seen a rotating set used so well since Fred Astaire used a rotating room in 1951's Royal Wedding. Thanks for the post. http://youtu.be/i0g3g6AvLtM
