When you first get your shiny new iPad, you are going to be overwhelmed with the thousands upon thousands of apps available in the App Store. How do you know where to begin? Here are some of the FREE apps that belong on every iPad:

ebook readers
1. iBooks - This is the Apple ebook reader. It is by far the best looking, which is why you should have it. However, because it offers a fairly small selection of books, this can't be your only ebook reader.

2. Kindle - The Kindle app allows you to buy and read any book from the Amazon Kindle store.

News - These are chosen mostly for their adaptation to the iPad and the quality of the display
1. ABC News
2. Huffington Post
3. USA Today
4. CNN
5. NPR

RSS - Stream your feeds froms blogs, twitter, Facebook, etc.
1. Pulse News Reader - Import your Google Reader feeds plus add Pulse suggested blogs and Facebook feeds.
2. Flipboard - named Apple's iPad app of the year, you can flip through your twitter, Facebook, Flickr and Google Reader feeds like a magazine.

Reference
1. Wikipanion - designed for easy search and navigation of Wikipedia on the iPad.
2. White & Yellow Pages - get phone numbers, driving directions and add to contacts. Also has local movie showtimes.

Entertainment
1. Netflix - sync up your account and watch streaming movies and television shows on your iPad.
2. ABC Player - Watch episodes of ABC television shows for free.

Communications
1. TextNow - text from you iPad
2. Twitter
3. Facepad - Facebook for iPad (brand new 12/10)

Miscellaneous
1. Pandora Radio
2. The Weather Channel
3. Google - use all of Google's products for this app - news, calendar, maps, etc.

Apps to help you find the best apps
1. AppStart - Great for when you are just starting out ($.99)
2. AppAdvice - They created AppStart. Use this when you are past the beginner stage. ($1.99)
2. AppShopper - Great for finding what is most popular and what is new.
