With graduation right around the corner, teens are beginning to think about the personal freedom that lies ahead.  However, that also means financial freedom, and as a parent you want to be able to give it to them, yet still maintain some control over their spending.

The PayPal Student Account is a great way to offer teens financial freedom, while still maintaining a parental safety net.
High School graduation is the perfect time to get your teen started with managing their finances.  Give them a graduation gift of money by way of a new PayPal Student Account.

The PayPal student account:
  • Helps parents teach their kids money management skills.
  • Permits teens to safely use money to make purchases, both online and offline.
  • Allows parents to set spending limits and keep a full account of all money spent by their kids.
  • Makes transfers into the Student Account, check balances and track purchases a breeze, hosting everything in one, safe, secure online portal.
Lets teens get their own PayPal Mastercard debit card and use it to make purchases anywhere Mastercard is accepted. It is also much easier and safer than supplying your teens with cash or a credit card. Help your teens on their path to independence. The PayPal Student Account is a way for you to assist in your their financial education.

I recently attended an event thrown by Atari to launch their new video game, Sandlot Sluggers. There were gaming stations set up around the room so that everyone could try out this new baseball game. It wasn't easy for me to get a turn because everyone was having so much fun that they didn't want to stop. And I mean everyone. Kids, teens and adults were all having a great time, which makes this a perfect game for the entire family.

Sandlot Sluggers is a new entry in the Backyard Sports line of video games. The game has improved 3-D graphics, fun mini-games, a family fun mode and a story mode where you can create your own characters. Laugh along with the comedic commentary and exaggerated animations. Take a peek at Sandlot Sluggers in motion:

Sandlot Sluggers, by Backyard Sports is available in Wii, Xbox 360 and DS. This perfect game for all ages has over 20 hours of turbo-injected gameplay. Your family will have hours of fun with the multiplayer tournaments, family mode, kid-style tricks and eight different, interactive fields. This would make a great Father's Day gift because it is one that dads can share with their kids.

Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this game at the Atari event. My opinion was not influenced by this.

See new: Lost Finale Explained for the Casual Lost Fan

I can't even begin to write a full recap or highlights post. All I can say is that my absolute favorite parts of the finale were when the characters remembered and the couples coming together. Sun and Jin, Sayid and Shannon, Claire and Charlie and Sawyer and Juliet. Although we didn't get answers, we did get a very satisfying, emotional ending that I enjoyed very much.

Best quotes of the Lost Series Finale:

1. Kate: Who died?  Desmond: A man named Christian Shepard. Kate: Christian Shepard, seriously?

2. Desmond: No one can tell you why you're here Kate, certainly not me.. I'm not talking about the church, I'm talking about here... As to what I want, I want to leave.

3. Sawyer: Well Doc, why don't you come down off the mountain top and tell us what the burning bush had to say for itself.

4. Sawyer: It doesn't sound like Jacob said anything about anything. Hurley: That's true dude, he's worse than Yoda.

5. Sawyer: You all head to the heart of the Island and I'll get the magic leprechaun out of the well. Sawyer to Kate: I'd ask you along but that would take all the fun out of me telling you you can't come. Kate: I guess I'll have to resist the urge to follow you anyway.

6. Jack: I took the job because the Island is all I've got left. It's the only thing in my life I haven't ruined.  Kate: Nothing is irreversible.

7. Ben to MIB: When you said you were going to destroy the Island, I thought you were speaking figuratively.

8. Sun: It's a girl.  Jin: Her name is Je Yeon.  Juliet: That's a lovely name. And for the record, you two speak English just fine.

9. Sawyer to Hurley: Easy big foot, its just me.

10. Jack to Locke before the surgery: I'll see you on the other side.

11. Miles to Richard: Welcome to the club, you've got your first gray hair. Richard: I think I just realized I want to live.

12. Frank: In case you haven't noticed, I'm a pilot.

13. Locke to Kate after she tries to shoot him: You might want to save your bullets. (Not smart of him to say, since it was her saved bullets that killed him).

14. Locke: So its you. Jack: Yeah, its me. Locke (saying what the audience is thinking): Jacob being who he is, I expected to be surprised. You're sort of the obvious choice, don't you think?

15. Jack to Locke: I'm going to kill you. Locke: How do you plan to do that. Jack: Its a surprise. LOL

16. Sayer: So Desmond's bait?  Jack: No, he's a weapon.  Sawyer: That's a hell of a long con, doc.

17. Desmond: This doesn't matter. Him destroying the Island, you destroying him. It doesn't matter. You're going to lower me into that light, and I'm going to go somewhere else. A place we can be with our loved ones. A place where we never have to think of this dammed place again. And you know the best part Jack, you are in this place. Jack: What happened, happened. All of this matters.

18. Sayid: What are we doing here? Hurley: I'm not allowed to tell you. There are rules dude. Sayid: Whose rules? Hurley: Don't worry about it, just trust me okay. I trust you. I think you're a good guy Sayid.

19. Locke: Does this remind you of anything Jack? Desmond going down into a hole in the ground. If there was a button down there to push, we could fight about whether to push it. Just like old times. Jack: You're not John Locke, you disrespect his memory by wearing his face, but you are nothing like him. It turns out he was right about just about everything. I just wish I could have told him that when he was still alive.

20. Locke: It looks like you were wrong, goodbye Jack. Jack after hitting Locke and drawing blood, showing that he is not invincible anymore: Looks like you were wrong too!

21. Eloise: I thought I told you to stop this. Desmond: You were perfectly clear, I chose to ignore you.

22. Locke about to kill Jack: I want you to know Jack that you died for nothing. Kate: I saved you a bullet!

23. Locke (after surgery and after he remembers): Jack, I hope that somebody does for you what you just did for me.

24. Jack to Kate after MIB dies: I'm fine, just find me some thread and I can count to five.

25. Jack: Kate, you gotta go and get Claire on that plane. Kate: Tell me I'm going to see you again. I love you. Jack: I love you.

26. Kate: I'll see you at the boat. (They then jump from the cliff into the water. A great Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid moment).

27. Sawyer pushes the G23 button for the apollo candy bar and it doesn't work so he sticks his hand in. Juliet: Can I help you.  Sawyer: Its okay, I'm a cop.  Juliet: Maybe you should read the machine its rights. Let me tell you a secret. If you unplug it and plug it back in again, the candy just drops right out. (Same as the plug in the glowing water on the Island). After Juliet hands him the candy he says, Did you feel that.  Juliet: We should get coffee some time (just like she said right before she died).  As they hug: Juliet, its me babe. I gotcha, I gotcha. Juliet: Kiss me James. Sawyer: You got it blondie!   Loved this scene!!!

28. After the concert ends, Kate to Jack: I stole your pen coming out of the bathroom on Oceanic 815. Jack: That's how I know you? Kate: No, that's not how you know me. Kate: I've missed you so much. Jack: What is happening to me. Who are you? Kate: I know you don't understand Jack, but if you come with me you will.

29. Hurley to Jack, when he says he is going down to get Desmond alone: No, no way, I'm not going to let you die. Jack: Hurley, I'm already dead. This is what I'm supposed to do. It needs to be you Hugo. If someone has to take care of the Island and protect it, it should be you. I believe in you.

30. Desmond: The light, I put it out. I thought I would leave this place. You were right Jack.  Jack: There's a first time for everything.  Ha  Jack again: I'll see you in another life brotha.

31. Richard to Frank on the plane: Miles says we're good. Frank: You better pray we are Ricky boy because I'm going to spin it around.

32. Miles: Way to wait for the last second Jim. Sawyer: Good to see you to Enos. (The plane taking off with the ground underneath collapsing reminded me exactly of 2012).

33. Ben: I'm very sorry for what I did to you John. I was selfish, jealous, I wanted everything you had. Locke: What did I have. Ben: You were special John and I wasn't. Locke: Well if it helps Ben, I forgive you. Ben: Thank you John, that does help. It matters more than I can say. Locke: What are you going to do now. Ben: I have some things I need to work out (I'm assuming Danielle and Alex), so I'll stay here awhile.

34. Hurley: What is my job now, what the hell am I supposed to do. Ben: You do what you do best. Helping people. You can start by getting Desmond home. Hurley: But how, people can't leave the Island. Ben: That's how Jacob ran things, maybe there's another way, a better way. Hurley: will you help me Ben? Ben: I'd be honored. Hurley: Cool.

35: Hurley (off the island to Ben): You know, you were a real good number two. Ben: You were a great number one.

36. Right after all of Jack's memories come back to him and he see's his father's empty coffin, he then see's Christian and says: I don't understand, you died.  Christian: Yes I did. Jack: Then how are you here right now? Christian: How are you here? Jack, realization coming over him: I died too. Christian: Its okay son. They hug and Jack cries.
:
37. Christian explains: I'm real, you're real. Everything that has ever happened to you is real. All the people in the church, they're all real too. Jack They're all dead? Christian: Everyone dies sometime. Some of them before you, some of them long after you. Jack: Why are they here now? Christian: There is no now, here. Jack: Where are we now? Christian: This is a place that you all made together so you could find one another. The most important time of your life was when you were with these people. That's why you are all here. No one does it alone Jack. You needed all of them and they needed you. Jack: For what? Christian: To remember and to let go. Jack: Kate, she said we were leaving. Christian: Not leaving, no, moving on. Jack: Where are we going. Christian: Lets go find out.

Are there any great quotes that I missed. Unfortunately many of the best scenes, those where the characters remember, didn't involve talking, just wonderful expressions, so I couldn't include them in this list. I will so miss watching, writing about and discussing Lost. It was a great ride.

The following is a guest post from Helen Ellis, author of THE TURNING: What Curiosity Kills.

Attention Teenage Girls! Your Mamas Remember

I am not a teenage girl, but I pretend to be in The Turning: What Curiosity Kills.  Because I remember.  Everyday, I have a not-so-fleeting sixteen year-old moment.  I worry that what I pull out of my closet is going to make me look like a dweeb.  I realize that nobody uses the word dweeb anymore.   When the wine store clerk waves off my i.d., I get the sinking feeling I no longer look underage.   But I sure feel that way sometimes.  Here’s a dirty little secret: you never outgrow your awkward phase.

The “turning” is the ultimate awkward phase.  Up until the affliction strikes her, Mary Richards is a normal teenage girl trying to get by unnoticed at the elite Manhattan Purser-Lilley Academy.  Her worst problem is shyness.  Then over the course of a day, she falls asleep in gym, licks milk off her kitchen floor, and opens her apartment window at three in the morning to a cat prowling her fire escape.   She opens her heart to brooding Nick Martin, who swears he understands what she’s going through.  She hunts with older, bad-boy Yoon.  To protect her sister, Ocatvia, when threatened, Mary grows fangs and claws.  Literally.

The “turning” heightens Mary’s curiosity.  And curiosity kills teenage angst and fear.  Being sixteen should be about being brave.  Not bungee-jumping brave, but having the courage to speak your mind, to kiss someone, to follow a dream—even if that dream is to be an accountant when none of the other kids at school think its cool.

Learn this.  Live this.  Remind your mothers of this.  They will be grateful to be reminded. The sooner you become brave, the easier it is to stay brave and not fall to peer pressure when you’re older.

My personal brave feats: writing The Turning: What Curiosity Kills without any assurance that it would be published; and if published, that anyone besides my mother would read it.  And sticking to my Luddite guns.  My name is Helen Ellis and I refuse to own a cell phone.

The penultimate episode of Lost, "What They Died For", has set everything up for Sunday's finale, "The End". It is time for the battle between Smokey and Jack, with help I am sure from Kate, Sawyer and Hurley. I'm not sure exactly where Desmond, Claire, Miles and Ben will fit in, but it should be a wild ride. It looks like the two worlds of Lost will finally meet.

Flash Sideways

1. Jack wakes up and is puzzled by a cut on his neck now (before it was an appendix scar). At breakfast with his son David we learn that they are going to a concert that night and David's mother will be there. Who will she be? I am sure it is someone we know. They only people that I can guess is either Sarah or Juliet.

2. Desmond places a fake call to Jack telling him that the airlines found his father's coffin. A way to meet up with Jack.

3. Desmond visits Locke's school again and Ben runs to his car to stop him from harming Locke. Desmond beats Ben until memories of being beaten by Desmond in the past flood his brain.

4. Ben goes to the school nurse to get patched up and Locke enters. Ben tells him, "The strangest thing happened. While he was beating me I think I saw something." When Locke tries to call the police, Ben stops him and says, "The man told me he wasn't trying to hurt you, he was trying to get you to let go".

5. At the police station, Miles tells Sawyer he is going to a concert at his father's museum, the same concert that Jack and family are attending. We also find out that Charlotte will be there. Desmond enters the station and surrenders to Sawyer for running down Locke and beating Ben. He is place in a cell next to Kate and Sayid. When Desmond sees them there a big smile comes over his face. His plan is proceeding as planned.

6. When school lets out, Alex sees Ben's bruises and says, "Why would someone try and hurt you. You're like the nicest guy ever" (in this timeline he actually is). She offers to have her mom drive him home. We now see a very sane, put-together Danielle. They invite Ben over to dinner and Danielle says, "We insist, even if we have to kidnap you", a call out to the season 2 episode where Danielle caught Ben/Henry Gale in her net and to Ben kidnapping Alex.

7. At dinner Daniel tells Ben, "Alex's father died when she was two. You are the closest thing to a father she's ever had". If the sideways world is where each of the Losties get what they most wanted, then Ben definitely got his wish to have his daughter Alex back.

8. Locke visits Jack in his office. Locke brings up that they were on the same flight and that even though he threw away Jack's card, he still wound up in Jack's care after the accident. He also tells him about what Ben said about Desmond and letting go. Then Locke used a favorite Lost line, "Maybe this is happening for a reason. Maybe you are supposed to fix me". Jack replies with another heavily used Lost line, "Mr. Locke, maybe you are mistaking coincidence for fate". This one conversation touched on major lost themes. It seems that Jack and Locke keep switching back and forth which one of them believes in fate and which doesn't. They never seem to be on the same side.

9. Sawyer opens the jail cells of Kate, Sayid and Desmond to ship them to county. Kate tries to talk Sawyer into letting her go but it doesn't work, he resists Kate's charms. I think this is because his biggest wish is to be with Juliet, not Kate. I am hoping that he meets her in the flash sideways during the finale.

10. Desmond bribed a corrupt Ana Lucia to break them out of the truck. Hurley shows up with the bribe money. He knows who Ana Lucia is. After that kiss with Libby, he must have gotten all his island memories back. Ana Lucia has no idea who any of them are. Hurley takes Sayid while Desmond takes Kate. They are all going to meet at the Concert!

Regular Island Timeline

1. While Jack is tending to Kate's wounds on the beach, She tells him, "Jin never had the chance to meet his daughter. Locke did this. We have to kill him, Jack". Jack agrees.

2. Jack tells Sawyer, Kate and Hurley that they need to find Desmond in the well that Sayid told them about because, "if Locke wants Desmond dead, then we're going to need him".

3. Ben, Miles and Richard are back. Its been a few episodes. They are on their way to Ben's house in New Otherton to get explosives. When Miles questions Ben's directional skills, Ben says that he lived in these houses a long time. Miles says, "Well I lived in these houses 30 years before ou did, otherwise known as last week, and I have no idea where the hell we are".

4. When they reach the area where the houses are Miles senses the dead ("I get wonky around dead stuff"). Richard tells Ben that he buried Alex there after Ben left.

5. Ben has the dynamite in his secret room. He tells them, "Its where I was told I could summon the monster. That's before I realized that it was the one summoning me." When he finds the dynamite he says to Richard, "Are you looking to cripple the plane or blow it to hell". Richard chooses the latter so Ben takes it all.

6. They hear a noise in the kitchen. It is Zoe. They have never met so Ben asks who she is. Widmore comes out and says, "She's with me. Hello Benjamin, May I come in?" Ben appears shocked to see him.

7. Ben asks why Widmore is there. Widmore tell Ben, "If you shoot me your last chance of survival will be gone". Ben asks Widmore how he got back to the Island and Widmore replies "Jacob invited me. He visited me not long after your people destroyed my freighter. He convinced me of the error of my ways. He told me everything I need to know for this exact purpose." When Ben asks what purpose, Widmore has no time to reply because Locke is near. Widmore and Zoe decide to hide, Miles runs and Richard and Ben decide to face him. Ben gives Miles a walkie talkie, "in case I need you".

8. While Jack and Sawyer are looking for the well, Sawyer feels guilty. He says, "I killed them, didn't I?" Unlike Sawyer who blamed Jack for Juliet's death, Jack lets Sawyer off the hook by saying, "No, he killed them".

9. Hurley then sees young Jacob and follows him. Young Jacob tells Hurley to give him the ashes he took from Illana's things after she died. Hurley hands them over and the boy runs. Hurley chases him and comes upon adult Jacob sitting by a fire. He tells Hurley, "My ashes are right there in that fire. When it burns out you'll never see me again. You should get your friends, we are very close to the end, Hugo". The end of the Island battle and the end of Lost. I guess the finale is aptly named "The End".

10. Locke arrives at the dock and walks towards Ben's house. Richard walks towards Locke because "I know this man, all he wants is for me to join him. If I can get him to leave with me, maybe that will give the rest of you a chance." Boy was he wrong. All of a sudden we see and hear smokey and he lifts Richard up and throws him. I'm assuming he's dead.

11. Locke then approaches Ben on the porch. Ben asks Locke, "Can I get you a glass of lemonade? Ha. Locke says, "I need you to kill some people for me Ben". Ben asks why he would do that and Locke replies, "because when I leave this island, you can have it all to yourself". Ben has always wanted to be in charge of the Island and says alright and leads him to where Widmore and Zoe are hiding ("he's hiding in my closet").

12. Locke and Ben enter the secret closet, although Locke wanted Ben to wait outside saying "You don't have to see this". Ben replied, "I want to see this". He is finally getting revenge on Widmore. When Widmore tells Zoe not to talk, Locke slits her throat. "You told her not to talk to me and that made her pointless". Locke threatens to kill Widmore's daughter Penny if he doesn't tell Locke why he came back to the island. He swears he won't hurt her if he gets the information he wants. Widmore tells Locke that he brought Desmond Hume back to the island as a measure of last resort. He refuses to say any more in front of Ben. Widmore begins to whisper to Locke and Ben shoots Widmore dead and says "He doesn't get to save his daughter". He has wanted Penny dead since Alex was killed. Then Ben says, "Didn't you say there were some other people to kill?" Unless this is an act, Ben is completely turned back to his mean old self.

13. Hurley brings Kate, Sawyer and Jack to Jacob. He is surprised that they can all see him also. Jacob greets them all by name. Kate asks, "So you're the ones that wrote our names of the wall. Is that why they are dead?" Jacob replies, "I'm very sorry". Kate says, "I want to know why, I want to know that Sun, Jin and Sayid didn't die for nothing." Jacob then says the words we want to hear, "Come and sit down and I'll tell you what they died for. I'll tell you why I chose them and why I chose you. And I'll tell you everything you need to know about protecting this island because by the time that fire burns out, one of you is going to have to start doing it." Answers, are we going to get answers?

14. Hurley asks why Jacob brought them all to the Island. Jacob says, "I brought all of you here because I made a mistake a very long time ago, and now there's a chance that all of you and everyone you care about will die". When Sawyer asks what mistake, Jacob says, "You call him the monster and I'm responsible for what happened to him. I made him that way and ever since then he's been trying to kill me. It was only a matter of time until he figured out how. When he did, someone would have to replace me and thats why I brought you all here." He explains that he chose them because none of them were doing fine. They were all flawed and alone and were looking for something they couldn't find. "I chose you because you needed this place as much as it needed you".

15. When Kate asked why her name was crossed out, Jacob said, "because you became a mother. It's just a line of chalk in a cave. The job is yours if you want it Kate." He explains that the job is protecting the light in the island from ever going out. It must be protected from him. Jacob adds "You must do what I could never do". Jack asks, "You want us to kill him? Is that even possible". Jacob replies, "I hope so because he is certainly going to try to kill you."

16. Jacob says that he isn't going to pick one of them. "I want you to have the one thing that I was never given, a choice".  Mother had thrust the job upon him even though he said he didn't want it. Jack volunteers to do it. "This is why I'm here, this is what I'm supposed to do".  Jacob says, "good, because its time".

17. Jacob led them to where they needed to go for Jack take over. When Jack and Jacob walked ahead, Sawyer said, "and I thought that guy had a god complex before" of Jack.

18. Jacob tells Jack what he has to do and then they drink the water. Jack asks how long he must do this job and Jacob replies as long as he can. Just as mother said to Jacob many years ago, Jacob now says to Jack, "You are now like me". I guess that means that Jack won't age anymore.

19. Ben and Locke walk through the jungle and Ben asks why Locke walks instead of just being smoke all the time. Locke says he likes to feel what its like to be human again. They come upon the well and see that Sayid didn't kill Desmond. Ben said, "It seems like someone helped him out", but Locke replies, "No, someone helped me out" Ben wants to know what Widmore said to him. Locke tells him that "he said that Desmond was a fail safe. Jacob's last resort in case I managed to kill all his beloved candidates. One final way to make sure that I never leave this place. I'm going to find Desmond and when I do he's going to help me to destroy the island"!!

Questions

1. Will Ben try to help Locke kill the remaining survivors?
2. What was Zoe's purpose on Lost?
3. Who else will be at the big concert besides the characters we saw in tonight's episode?
4. Will Jack end up living on the island alone?
5. How will the two timelines be explained?

This Thursday night, May 20, 2010, I will be at the NY Times Center for Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse's discussion of the Lost finale. This is the last time they plan on speaking about it for months. Check back on Friday to read about everything the Lost producers had to say.

Back when I was a teenager (in prehistoric times), girls did not have nearly the pressures they have today. Without cell phones and the Internet, there was no need to be constantly on, so there was more time to relax. There also wasn't the same urgency to beef up the college resume with hundreds of clubs and AP courses and we didn't have parents that signed us up for every activity known to man. However, we still had problems, and there were very few resources specifically made for teenage girls.

As part of my participation in the Silicon Valley Moms Book Club, I just read a new book by Jennifer Ashton, M.D., Ob-Gyn, called The Body Scoop for Girls: A Straight-Talk Guide to a Healthy, Beautiful You. This book is written for female adolescents and only deals with issues for that age group. In fact, the first chapter is titled: Not Your Mother's Gynecologist: You're a New Kind of Girl - You Deserve a New Kind of Medicine. Wow. The only book I remember ever finding and reading on that topic when I was a teen was the classic, Our Bodies, Ourselves. As helpful a resource as it was, it was written for women of all ages, not directly to me.

Obviously when I was a teen, we didn't have the technology teens have now. Even though the Internet and and the many social networks have been known to cause many problems to teens, they can also be very helpful. Teens now have easy access to help. There are many websites where they can find advice and many protected social networking sites that empower tween and teen girls and give them a source for friendships.

One of the best resources for teen girls today are their mothers. Baby Boomer and Gen X parents have much more in common with their teens than with their parents. Most teenage girls today seem much more comfortable talking to their moms about almost anything. And by sharing their problems with their moms, they will find help, because even if the mom doesn't have answers, she will try to find them. That is what parents today do.

The Five Languages of Teenagers: The Secret to Loving Teens Effectively, is a new book by Gary Chapman. This book is about the importance of parental love in the emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual development of teenagers. However, as the author points out, all teens are different and they respond differently to the various ways parents communicate love.

According to Gary Chapman, there are 5 love languages that teens respond to. Parents need to discover which of these is their teens primary love language or else their teens might not be fully feeling the love conveyed by their parents. The five languages of love are:
  1. Words of affirmation
  2. Physical Touch
  3. Quality Time
  4. Acts of Service
  5. Gifts
I had never thought about this before, but after reading The Five Love Languages of Teens, I see the relevance with my own sons. One son has always responded more through physical touch and gifts, where for my other son it has been words of affirmation and quality time. It was fascinating for me to realize that using the method your teens most responds to will effect how loved they feel.

The book also discusses issues that are key in teen's lives such as the search for independence and identity. Parents will also receive advice on breaking destructive patterns and forging constructive paths. You will see that although teens desire independence and they need responsibility. There is also a critical chapter on loving your teens when they fail.

If all this wasn't enough, The Five Love Languages of Teenagers includes the very interesting story of how and when teenage culture began and how teenagers got their name. Do you know that the word teenager did not come about until 1941 and that until the 1930s, there was really no separate teenage classification or culture. Read The Five Love Languages of Teenagers for the rest of this story and to learn how to better communicate love to your teens.

There has been a rising trend in volunteering in the United States. One year ago President Obama signed into law the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. A recently published story in USA Today cited statistics showing that the number of online searches for phrases such as "volunteer work" and "volunteer opportunities" has risen greatly during the past year. For even more on this growing trend, watch this ABC News video on volunteering.

Whether the growth in volunteering is due to the "Obama Effect" or partly due to unemployment leading people to volunteer while looking for work, hopefully more and more people will get on board. This is also a great time to get families involved, especially teens who are always looking to be on top of growing trends.

In 3 volunteer Websites where Teens can Choose a Cause, you can find information of Think MTV, Causecast and Do Something, 3 great charitable volunteer organizations for teenagers. Another great website for all ages is Yahoo! for Good. This website offers resources on volunteering, donating, raising awareness of causes, connecting with other do-gooders and staying informed. I used Yahoo! for Good to find a cause to donate to over the holidays. Volunteer Match is a website that matches people with causes in their communities.

Many high schools have volunteer requirements and many teens also volunteer to booster their college resumes. While all of this is great, the best feeling comes from volunteering just to help out. There are so many ways to volunteer that almost anyone can find something that they would enjoy doing for a cause that interests them. If you can't find any ideas in the recommended websites above, be part of the rising trend and search online for volunteer opportunities.

Wow. Tonight it was clear that Lost is almost over. Finally, in Season 6, Episode 15, we got some big time answers. However, there are still so many questions. Even without any of the regular Lost cast, Across the Sea was one of my favorite episodes.

Big Reveals

1. Jacob and MIB (we still don't know his name!!!) are twin brothers. Did not see that coming. The boys that MIB/Locke had been seeing all season were Jacob and MIB as kids. (Remember the manuscript that Sawyer found in the Oceanic wreckage called Bad Twin. Interesting).

2. The mystery of Adam and Eve is now solved. Adam and Eve are MIB and Mother (great seeing Allison Janney from The West Wing). Loved the way they flashed from Jacob putting the black and white rock with Mother and MIB to Kate and Jack finding them in season one and Locke naming them Adam and Eve.

3. There really is a reason for protecting the Island. From what we saw happen when MIB slid down the glowing water, it seems that it is a source of evil.

4. Jacob killed MIB after seeing him kill Mother. We watched a matricide and a fratricide within a few minutes of each other. However, Mother knew she would die when she went to MIB, and she wanted to. She thanked him for doing it. Once she turned over the burden of protecting the Island to Jacob, she was ready to go. Maybe that is why Jacob didn't try to talk Ben out of killing him. The burden was too much and he knew his replacement was on the Island.

5. When Jacob pushed MIB into the glowing water he became the smoke monster. His body died. However, when we see MIB in later years, he must have used his dead body the same way he later used Locke's dead body.

6. The Donkey Wheel! The Well! We see that MIB originally created the wheel with help from the shipwrecked men when they discovered that metal behaves very strangely on the Island. Even though Mother destroyed it, MIB must have rebuilt it but then could not use it himself. The well is the same one that Locke went down to leave the Island when they were time traveling.

Other Highlights

1. Mother killed the men from the boat to stop them from telling others about the source. She was protecting the Island.

2. The biological mother of the twins, Claudia, named Jacob but did not name the other twin because she had only picked out one name. Was he ever given a name?

3. When the boys were 13, MIB found a game with black and white rocks. The game is an old Egyptian game called Senet. Senet is originally from Egypt in 3100 B.C. MIB said he knew how to play it. How?

4. Ever since MIB was young, he wanted to go "across the sea". Once he found out his real mother was from elsewhere he was desperate to get off the Island.

5. Only MIB was able to see their dead mother, Claudia. Why couldn't Jacob? Is it that MIB has the same gift as Hurley?

6. Jacob and Mother drank from the same wine bottle we saw in Ab Aeterno.

Quotes

1. When Mother found MIB with the game, he said, "Jacob told you what I found?". Mother replied, "Of course he did, he doesn't know how to lie. He's not like you. You're special".

2. When Mother asks young MIB where he thinks he came from, he answers, "From somewhere else, across the sea".

3. When young MIB asked Mother what death is, she told him, "Something you will never have to worry about".

4. Mother tells both Jacob and MIB that the men they saw in the woods are dangerous. "They come to fight, destroy, corrupt and it always ends the same". This is exactly what Jacob and MIB said during the season 5 finale on the beach. Mother also said, "They are people and people destroy each other". When Jacob said, "We are people, can we hurt each other?", Mother replied, "I made it so that you can never hurt each other". How does she have this power. Who is she?

5. When telling the twins why they  must make sure that nobody ever finds the glowing stream, Mother tells them, "This is the reason we are here. We must make sure no one ever finds it... A little of this same light is inside every man, but they always want more. If the light goes out here, it goes out everywhere. That is why I'm protecting it. But I can't protect it forever... It will be one of you." Why does it have to be only one? Why not both?

6. While playing Senet, MiB says to Jacob, "You can't do that because it is against the rules. One day you will make your own rules".

7. When MIB finds out about his real mom and tells Mother he is leaving, she says, "Whatever you have been told, you will never be able to leave the Island". MIB replies, "That's not true and one day I will prove it!" This has been his mission all these years. It's hard not to feel bad for him.

8. Jacob to Mother, "Why do you love him more than me". Mother, "I love you in different ways". Could be a conversation in any normal family. Sibling Rivalry that later turned extreme.

9. As adults, MIB told Jacob that the men he is with are "greedy, manipulative, untrustworthy and selfish". He stays with them because "they are a means to an end". Getting off the Island.

10. When Mother finds MIB down the well he says, "I spent 30 years searching for that waterfall with the light. I never found it. I've been figuring out how to reach it for a very long time." When Mother says that he has no idea what to do with it, MIB says, "because you wouldn't tell me... I'm going to make a system with the wheel, the water and the light and I'll finally be able to leave". When she asks how he knows it will work, he says, "Because I'm special".

11. Mother takes Jacob back to the water source and tells him he has to protect it now. When he asks what it is, she says "life, death, rebirth. Its the source, the heart of the Island. Promise me no matter what you do you will never go down there. It would be worse than dying Jacob, much worse".

12. After Jacob and Mother drank the wine for Jacob to take over
protection duties, Mother said to Jack, "Now you and I are the same".
What did that mean?

13. When Jacob beat MIB and dragged him to the water source, MIB said,
"You can't kill me, Jacob". Jacob replied, "I'm not going to kill you"
and pushed him into the stream. Was that a loophole?

Questions

1. When did all of this take place. How long ago was this?
2. Who is Mother? Why does she have all those powers? How did she get the job of protector of the Island?
3. Why did Jacob age until about 40 and then stop aging?
4. Was it MIB that reconstructed the wheel or someone else? Widmore?
5. Does Widmore know about the source? Is that why he has wanted to get back to the Island so badly?
6. What exactly does the glowing water source do? We saw what it did to MIB, but can it do different things to different people?
7. Why are there so many things from ancient Egypt on the Island?
8. Does MIB have a name? If so, will we ever learn it? Is there a reason it is being held from us?

One more episode before the finale. Next week's episode of Lost is titled, "What They Died For". Then, only 5 days later, on Sunday, May 23rd we will witness a moment in TV history, the 2 1/2 hour finale of Lost, titled "The End". Good or bad, it will be epic.

The huge growth in young adult novels has given teens a wealth of books geared directly to them. With so many books to choose from, teens can use the help of websites and blogs in which they can find and discuss their reading interests. Reading often propels an interest in writing, and there are also websites for teens to share and discuss what they have written.

Here are a few interesting literary websites for teens that I have not written about yet:

1. inkpop - inkpop is an online network that connects up-and-coming authors with talent spotter and publishing professionals in the teen market. It is all about community. Feedback for writers is what inkpop is all about. HarperCollins editors read inkpop's most popular submissions in hopes of discovering the next big thing in teen lit. Members can post books, short stories, essays and poetry. Membership is free and anyone 13 and older can join.

2. Point of View - The Point of View website is for teen readers to share the unforgettable intensity of the type of novels that stay with you forever. Passionate fans of books that transform difficult topics into heartbreaking, yet uplifting stories, can connect with other fans and discuss these books here. Some of the novels on Point of View are Willow, If I Stay and Wintergirls.

3. Teens Read and Write - This is a blog written by three sibling book lovers. They read, review and love Young Adult novels. Readers can communicate through comments and take part in reading challenges.

When I was a teenager, the number of books made specifically for teens were nothing compared to today. I went directly from children's books to regular novels. And it was much more difficult to find other teens that read the same books. For more blogs on Young Adult books, see 50 Best Blogs for Teen Readers written by the Online Degrees website.

Planning for college is a huge and scary time in a teen's life. There is so much to know, and so much that might be forgotten. From finding the right school to decorating your dorm room, there are websites that can help. After scouring the web, here are 5 lists on a variety of college topics that can be very helpful to both teens and their parents.

1. High School "To Do" Lists - Planning for college should optimally begin in ninth grade. Here is a very helpful article from the Going to College website that lists everything you should be doing in each year of high school to help you get a leg up on your future education.

2. The Princeton Review's Guide to 286 Green Colleges - There are hundreds of lists compiled by many organizations to help students find a college suited to their needs. However, a brand new list has recently been published by The Princeton Review specifically to help students, interested in the environment, find a green college.

3. Off-to-College Checklist - The CollegeBoard has put together a very thorough list of everything you might need to bring with you to college.

4. 100 Awesome Blog Posts on Dorm Room Design - Having two sons who only cared about where the video game consoles would go, I didn't have to deal with this. However, many students, especially females, care very much. The Online Degree website culled the Internet for blog posts on dorm room design and made a list of their 100 favorites.

5. The 21 Things Every First Year College Student Should Do - Once at college, there is more to do then going to classes, studying and having fun. Here is a list, originally published by The Princeton Review and republished here on the High School Graduate website, with helpful hints for college freshmen.

Going to college, especially if you go away to school, is one of the most unique experiences you will ever have. There is no other time when you are surrounded by mostly people your own age for four years. Some students go wild with the new found freedom, others have trouble handling things on their own. For most students, it is an amazing experience, one they will never forget. Enjoy these years, you won't have this chance again, however don't do so at the expense of your studies. You still need to get a job when you graduate.

To celebrate moms and Mother's Day, I want to share some quotes on motherhood. Some are beautiful and some are funny. Enjoy and Happy Mother's Day.

5. If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands? - Milton Berle

Playing video games with your teens and tweens can be one of the best ways to connect with them. It can also be the most fun. Video games are a very big part of most teens lives and to not get involved is to miss out on wonderful opportunities to spend time with them. Almost every time I play video games with my family, there is a great deal of laughter, bonging and great memories to look back on.

Many of the video games that my sons play don't interest me and I'm not suggesting that you play every game your teens own. However, there are a number of games that appeal to a large demographic and families can all play together. Here are my recommendations:

Game Collections

1. Hasbro Family Game Night - a compilation of favorite board games converted to into a video game. Games include Boggle, Yahtzee, Scrabble, Battleship and Connect Four. My family always loved playing board games together, but as they got older it got more difficult to pull them away from their video game console to get them to sit for a board game. This is the perfect way to get your teens back into the old fashioned fun of board games.

2. Namco Museum Virtual Arcade - Over 30 classic video games, the type that parents of teens probably played when they were teenagers. Including many versions of Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Rolling Thunder, Galaga and much more. Share the games that you grew up with, with your teens. Some Xbox Live arcade games are included and other games have new arrangements.

Music Games - a great way to bond over gaming and music. You will learn current music while your teens discover classic rock.

1. Guitar Hero - Choose from many versions such as Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, Guitar Hero World Tour, Guitar Hero 5 and expansions such as Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero: Metallica, Guitar Hero: Smash Hits, Guitar Hero: Van Halen, Band Hero and DJ Hero.

2. Rock Band - Similar to Guitar Hero, but Rock Band adds a singing mode and comes with more instruments (later iterations of Guitar Hero, like World Tour, include drums and mics like Rock Band). I like to be the singer since I have trouble keeping up on the instruments. Games include Rock Band 2, The Beatles: Rock Band, Rock Band 3, Lego Rock Band and Green Day: Rock Band (coming in June).

3. Dance, Dance Revolution - If you want to have fun and burn calories at the same time, this is the game for you. The games come with a dance mat and you must follow the moves on the screen. You choose the songs to dance to, although with these games, the songs are definitely geared to your teens. Newer versions include Dance Dance Revolution Universe.

Movies - Making video games based on popular movies has become the biggest trend in gaming.

For tweens and younger teens:
1. Harry Potter video games - The book series that got millions of kids to read and got parents to connect with their kids has not only spun off movies, but many games. There is a game for every movie and my favorite, Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4.
2. Up video game - This wonderful, academy award nominated Pixar movie is also a fun video game for all ages.
3. How to Train Your Dragon - Originally a book, then recently released as a movie to critical acclaim, it is now also a fun family video game
For Older teens:
1. Peter Jackson's King Kong - rated T for Teens and based on the 2005 King Kong film.
2. Batman Arkham Asylum - rated T for Teens, one of the hottest games of 2009.

Sports - If you already bond with your teens through sports, you will now have an additional way to do so.

1. Madden NFL 10, NHL 10, MLB 10 and NBA Live 10 are the top rated sports video games in which you control real players on real teams. Rated E for everyone.

2. Fight Night Round 4 - Rated T for teen, for families that enjoy boxing.

Have fun with these games. I am usually a fairly competitive game player, but I know I'm not in the same league as my sons when it comes to gaming. However, most of the time they get a kick out of my attempts and it makes for lots of fun. It is the attempt and the quality time that counts. I hope you have enjoyed my series on Video Games and Families. If you missed my previous posts, please check out Video Games and Families - Learn and Connect with your Teens, Using Video Game Parental Controls and Online Video Gaming and Safety.

This post is sponsored by Get Game Smart a great resource that helps families make smart, safe choices about kids’ media use - especially video games.

Do not read this if you have not yet watched Lost, episode 6.14, "The Candidate". I'm still having trouble believing everything I saw. Although the producers warned that there would be major deaths near the end, I didn't see so many happening at once. Because I am still in shock, I am not going to write a full chronological recap. I'm just going to discuss the amazing moments.

Flash Sideways

1. Jack tells Locke that he is a Candidate for surgery to correct his paralysis. So the title of this episode was not only about the island candidates.

2. How did Locke wind up paralyzed in both worlds when they happened in two totally different ways? Locke is really the unlucky one, not Hurley. So we now know that Locke caused both his own paralysis and the might-as-well-be-dead condition of Anthony Cooper, his father.

3. In the flash sideways, we now see that Ben and Locke's fathers and Desmond's father-in-law are much nicer to them than in the real world, yet Jack's father was the same. Why?

4. After Locke tells Jack about the plane accident, Jack says "What Happened, Happened".

5. Jack is as stubborn as ever, trying to get Locke to have the surgery. When he saw Helen at the nursing home, she said, "You saved John's life, why can't that be enough?" Jack replied, "Because its not."

6. When Jack tries to wake Locke in the hospital, Locke murmurs, half asleep, "push the button" and "I wish you had believed me". The believed me line was in Locke's suicide note to Jack.

7. Jack and Claire finally talk. Jack tells her that their father drank himself to death. Christian left a music box to Claire. Is that the same music box that Danielle had? Jack then invites Claire to move in with him because "We're family".

8. It was great seeing Bernard again, even if only in the flash sideways. It was funny when he accused Jack of flirting with his wife while he was in the bathroom.

9. Jack seemed to notice that something was weird when he found out that not only Locke, but Claire and Bernard were also on flight 815 with him.

On the Island

1. Sun and Jin just got together and now they are dead. How could they be given so little time together after a three year separation? Sun pleaded with Jin to leave. It was very touching when Jin said "I won't leave you. I will never leave you again." A real Titanic moment when they drowned holding hands, with the beautiful Lost score playing in the background. What is going to happen to their daughter, Ji-Yeon?

2. Sayid died a hero. He fought his possession by Smokey to do a good thing. Right before he ran off with the bomb he told Jack that Desmond is alive and that "You need him because Locke wants him dead". When the others were trying to escape the sub, Hurley said, "I have to go back for Sayid". Jack said, "There is no Sayid!"

3. I'm assuming that Frank died, but without seeing for sure, we don't really know.

4. The only regulars still alive are now Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley, Claire and, even though we didn't see them tonight, Miles, Ben, Richard and Desmond. And then there is Smokey in Locke's body.

5. When Hurley, Jack, Kate and Sawyer got to the beach, Kate began to cry. Immediately after, Hurley started sobbing. Jack walked away from them to the water and then he began to cry also.

6. Now we know for sure that Smokey is all bad. Any hints of him being good were just an act. He pulled a long con to get them all together in a small place so that they would kill each other. Jack figured it out and knew the bomb wouldn't go off if they didn't touch it, because Smokey can't directly kill the candidates. Jack said, "What if he didn't need us all to go with him, he just couldn't leave until we  were all dead." But Sawyer wouldn't listen and pulled the wire, playing right into Smokey's plan.

7. Earlier in the episode, as part of Smokey's con, he told the survivors that Widmore's plan was to get them all together is one small place (the plane) to kill them all. But that was his plan all along.

8. Jack rescued Sawyer, even though Sawyer caused the explosion. Does that make them even now for Jack's part in Juliet's death?

9. The season 3 cages were back. When Sawyer disarmed one of Widmore's men, Widmore came out and pulled a gun on Kate. He said that even though he couldn't kill Sawyer (because he is a candidate), he could kill kate, so Sawyer backed off. When Jack rescued them from the cages after Smokey killed Widmore's men, Jack said, "I'm with him", pointing at the smoke.

10. Smokey killed many (if not all) of Widmore's men. Where is Zoe?

11. Kate was shot but still alive at the end of the episode. Will she make it until the finale?

12. When Smokey saw that some survived the submarine explosion, he picked up his gun and told Claire  "I'm going to finish what I started". How is he going to do that when he can't directly kill the candidates?

13. Who was Widmore talking about when he said, "He's Coming"?

It was great to have all of the original cast back together again, even though it was temporary. However, they are all still alive in the flash sideways . In fact, it was bittersweet seeing Jin walk into Sun's hospital room with flowers shortly after we saw them die.

It was just announced tonight that the Lost series finale is going to have another half hour added to it. That means that from 7-9 there will be a 2 hour recap, from 9-11:30 the finale will air, and then from 11:30-12:30 there will be a Lost Jimmy Kimmel special. What a night. Hopefully there will still be a few characters alive by then.
