While reading the novel Comfort Food by Kate Jacobs, I found myself relating to the main character Gus (short for Augustus) in many ways. Even though she has her own cooking show and I am the world's worst cook, we both have issues with aging and have children that are becoming adults.
I originally was drawn to Gus and her worries about how aging could impact her career. But what really made me think about myself was when Gus's daughters began working on her show. My sons have played some part in almost everything I've done since they were born.
I had always seen myself as a career woman and never thought I'd stay home for a day after I had kids. That changed the second my baby was born. For six years I became a stay at home mom, and despite everything I ever thought, I loved it.
When my kids were six and three, I bought a computer school for 3-8 year olds where I ran the office out of my home and hired teachers to go and do the teaching. Not only was I home with my sons, but they got to test (play) with every new piece of educational software that I bought. I wonder if this had anything to do with my oldest becoming a software engineer.
When my kids were in high school I sold the business and became an academic librarian at a law school. I became a wiz at online research and became very Internet savvy. Not only was I very helpful to my sons when they had papers to research, but I was always just as up-to-date with technology as they were, if not more.
Once they were both in college, I decided to take up blogging. What was the first thing I thought of when trying to decide what to blog about? My teenage sons. I added in our love of pop culture and my knowledge of technology and once again by kids were part of my new career.
This post was inspired by the book Comfort Food by Kate Jacobs that I read as part of the Silicon Valley Mom Bloggers Book Club for May.

What wonderful careers you had. To raise your children while working all those jobs, wow. I admire you!
The hardest but most rewarding job in the world is being a mom! :)
