The Life on Mars finale was amazing. As sorry as I am to see it end, at least we were treated to a fantastic, utterly surprising ending that worked. I don't think I could have asked for a better one. It was so much more satisfying than if it had been a coma like in the BBC version. I loved that these people he thought he met in 1973 are really part of his current life. He can still find happily ever after with the future version of Annie.
The songs that played during the finale of Life on Mars were:
1. Life Is A Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me) - Reunion
2. Mona Lisa's And Mad Hatters - Elton John
Although they discussed David Bowie, they didn't play any of his music. I fully expected to hear his song Life on Mars again during the finale. It is so wild that Sam's 2008 life as a cop wasn't any more real than his 1973 life. I wonder if the writers had this ending in mind all along, or if it came to them recently.
I am looking forward to buying the DVD of Life on Mars when it is released. It is the only thing I will have left of this brilliant but cancelled TV show.

I agree totally. There are not too many shows that i look forward to watching week in and week out, but this was one of those. I wished it could have been a two hour finally so that it didnt have to rush at the end. I actually felt like i had a connection to the characters in this show and knew them. Too many shows have a large number of characters and identity becomes lost but not here. We all waited each week for our friends to meet us on the screen. It felt like family. It's shows like these, the ones that make you think, that seem to get cancelled. Oh well! Great show, great ending and great cast.
I was disappointed in the finale. (I'm having that issue with series finales lately, maybe it's me?) It seemed to me that the ending was hastily done, that they didn't put a lot of thought into it. But again, it could just be me.
It was an awesome ending to an awesome show. The writers did an excellent job. I had figured that Sam was in coma since day one, but I never saw this kind of end coming. Absolutely brilliant. I wish there were more shows like this. Thanks for listing all the songs. I shall miss checking up on the names each week. Cheers.
I really liked this show. I admit, I did not watch it often, but I caught the last 15 minutes or so of the finale. I REALLY enjoyed it--and had no idea that this show was cancelled! BUMMER! :-/
I didn't watch all of the episodes, but I really enjoyed the ones I did see. I liked the finale, too.
When will the CD of the music played during the season be out?
I couldn't find any information on that, but I do know that the DVD of the series will come out in September.
Great show - at present still on down here in Australia on Ten. I'm really annoyed that TV networks seem to think no one wants to watch shows like Life On Mars...disappointing to say the least. If only we could have some thinking TV Execs.....
I loved this series as everybody else has. I am now going to get the UK series just to see the different endings - will be a bit weird after watching the US series. But heres to an open mind. Also loved the music fantastic.
There is a second series (or really a continuation of this show called Ashes to Ashes... I just found out about it and its based on a girl who gets shot in 2008 and wakes up in 1982. It has some of the same characters and even mentions Sam Tyler as the girl looks up his story to try and find out what to do...
I really LOVED the show, but I was really damn dissapointed with the ending
COME ON even french movies have acceptable endings! This was just... ugh!
I'd have liked 2 see the BBC version but unfortunately I don't have BBC on my TV...
I found that people tended to either love or hate the ending. I happened to love it, but it is such a subjective thing. You can get the BBC version on DVD. I heard it has a completely different ending.
They did play "Life on Mars". During the first show, just prior to Sam getting run over, its playing on his ipod...GOD I MISS THAT SHOW
The last few episodes -- the plots and plot twists -- and the music, were absolutely amazing. Re-watched the entire series a couple of months back, as I was recuperating from pnuemonia (a state of suspended animation not unlike what Sam went through en route to Mars!). Overall, my favorite episode was the penultimate one, 'Everyone Knows It's Windy'. "One day, we are here; and then, we are not. We each have a different past, but the same future. Which, is why we are here for each other!"
I agree. I should re-watch it also. I bought the dvd but still haven't opened it yet. Such a great show.
