Do you remember how popular Green Day and their American Idiot CD were back in 2004 and 2005. At least half the songs on American Idiot also became hit singles. My favorite thing about this CD was that it was loved by all ages. My sons and I listened to and discussed the songs on American Idiot often. Now, this great album by Green Day is being adapted into a musical production, also named "American Idiot".

For now, American Idiot is being produced for Berkeley Repertory Theater in California and will debut in September. There are no plans for Broadway yet, however the show is a collaboration between Green Day and Michael Mayer, the winner of the Tony Award for Spring Awakening.

I remember when American Idiot was new, before I was that familiar with it, my son telling me that it was basically a rock opera like Tommy by The Who. I was always a much bigger fan of Quadrophenia, and I used this opening to turn him on to it. This was bonding over music at its best. Now it turns out that Green Day looked up to the Who as its Idols and Quadrophenia is about to open on stage in Britain in May.

Some of the hit songs that came out of American Idiot, in addition to the title song, were Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Wake Me Up When September Ends. For more information on Green Day's adaptation of American Idiot see this article in the New York Times. I hope American Idiot comes to Broadway. I would love to see this Green Day show with my sons.
